I think of phrases, they just pop into my head or hear something and its stands out to me. Sometimes it won’t leave my head; I try to write it down. When I go about pyrography or painting I pick a color or two I like. Start with that and go from there with what looks good to me and represents my mood or life moment. I don’t start out with intention or a plan. It then flows and I don’t have an expectation or feel pressure to create it just comes and feels right. Once it forms enough I pick the right emotion and phrase for it from my list. Usually there’s a phrase that’s perfect for whatever I’ve done. I’m inspired by my upbringing, my neighborhood, my heritage, and most importantly what we experience in life that is challenging and a hardship, but improves us and adds substance and emotion to life. That rough stuff. The hardest stuff, and a lot of the time the best stuff and we don’t even know it at the time. Echo park California third generation and the same goes for art practice. I have no formal training,  but I have been trained.
